110% increase in MBBS seats, 355 government colleges set up in 2022: Health Ministry

The number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges have increased from 253 in 2018-19 to 355 in 2022-23, the minister explained.

There has been an increase of 110 per cent in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,07,948 as of now, informed Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister Of Health And Family Welfare, to the Parliament on Friday. There is also an increase of 117 per cent in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 67,802, he added.

These figures were released as an answer to a query raised by M Badruddin Ajmal, Lok Sabha member representing Dhubri, Assam.

“The Government has increased number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats. There is an increase of 82% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 704 as of now. Further, there is an increase of 110% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,07,948 as of now, there is also an increase of 117% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 67,802 as of now,” he said.

In addition to this, Bharati Pravin Pawar, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, also notified that there are 56,283 MBBS seats in government medical colleges and 51,665 MBBS seats in private medical college for the year 2023-24, including 1,615 government and 1,050 private MBBS seats in Bihar.

The number of government medical colleges has increased from 253 in 2018-19 to 355 in 2022-23. The number has only seen an upward tick since 2018 — 279 in 2019-20, 289 in 2020-21 and 322 in 2021-22.

Similarly, the number of private medical colleges of India has also increased since 2018. There were 248 Indian private medical colleges in 2018-19, which increased to 260 in 2019-20, 269 in 2020-21, 290 in 2021-22 and 293 in 2022-23.

“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/ referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts where there is no existing Government or private medical college with fund sharing between Center and State Governments in the Ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern special category states and 60:40 for others. Under the scheme, 157 medical colleges have been approved in the three phases, including 08 medical colleges in Bihar with approved cost of Rs. 1628 Cr,” Pawar added.
