Senior Among Seniors

Presiding over a two-judge Supreme Court bench hearing bail pleas of 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case accused last Friday, Justice Aravind Kumar wanted to know who was more senior between senior advocates Kapil Sibal and A M Singhvi. This was after the latter concluded arguments and Sibal rose to make submissions. Singhvi was quick to respond that Sibal was senior to him. Justice Kumar in a lighter vein said that he was asking because as per the Advocates Act the senior among the seniors has to make the opening arguments. Sibal said: “I never look at these things. It’s not relevant.” Justice Kumar added, “Normally when a batch of seniors appear, the senior-most of the seniors will lead…We wanted to be sure. So, we read the Advocates Act.” Sibal said “many of our traditions… we don’t follow anymore. But it’s ok. We abide by.” Laughs followed as Justice Kumar said “always your statements are loaded”. “As they should be,” Sibal was quick to reply.
