The stray tiger which has been roaming in Puranpur area of Pilibhit for more than two months, claimed a third life in less than one month. The half-eaten body of an elderly woman was found by the villagers on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sumitra (65),a resident of Ruiyan village. Forest officials said the woman had gone to visit her field on Wednesday afternoon around 1 pm as per her daily routine, but did not return till evening. The villagers then started a search and found her body lying in a cane field near Madho Tanda road around 8 am on Thursday.

Another elderly man Chhote was attacked by the tiger near Jatpura village on Wednesday. The tiger left after some villagers made noise, leaving Chhote badly injured.
Before that on August 21,the tiger had killed an elderly woman named Phoolmati. After the first casualty, forest officials had called a tranquilising expert team from Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). However, the team faced problems in running the operation as the farmers protested against use of elephants in the cane fields.
After the killings by the tiger, angry villagers protested against the forest officials for not being able to tranquilise the tiger. They held demonstrations on Madho Tanda road Wednesday and suspended their protest only after senior police and forest officials assured them of early capture of the tiger.
