A woman has been arrested in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district for allegedly trying to kill the mother of a newborn at a local hospital by injecting air into the victim’s vein in a bid to cause fatal air embolism, police said Saturday.

The incident took place at a private hospital at Parumala, in Pathanamthitta district, on Friday evening — Anusha, 30, a pharmacist by profession, entered the victim’s hospital room in a nurse’s uniform and allegedly tried to inject air three times into her veins with an empty syringe in an effort to kill her, police said.

Pathanamthitta district police superintendent Swapnil M Mahajan said the accused wanted to enter into a relationship with the victim’s husband, whom she apparently knew from their college days, and thus planned to kill Sneha, 25, the mother of the newborn.

Air embolism is blockage of blood supply caused by air bubbles in a blood vessel. The knowledge that it can be fatal if air enters the blood circulatory system might have prompted Anusha to resort to this act, Mahajan stated in a release.

The victim had given birth at the hospital a week ago. She had been discharged from hospital, but her baby has been under treatment, relatives said. On Friday afternoon, when she was in her room in the hospital, Anusha, wearing a nurse’s overcoat, entered and started administering an injection, police said. According to police, she tried to administer air injections into Sneha’s vein thrice.

As Sneha grew suspicious at these repeated attempts since she had already been discharged, she questioned the purported nurse, at which point Anusha allegedly tried to use force to repeat the act, police said.

Subsequently, Sneha and a bystander raised an alarm, leading to Anusha’s detention.

Anusha has been arrested and booked under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 419 (cheating by personation). Police said she bought a syringe from a local pharmacy on Friday, hours before she went to the hospital to allegedly kill Sneha.

She was produced in a magistrate court on Saturday, and was sent to 14-day judicial custody.

According to police, Anusha’s husband works abroad.

Thiruvalla deputy police superintendent S Arshad said, “She (Anusha) went to the hospital to meet the new mother (Sneha) and the baby after speaking with the latter’s husband. So far, we haven’t come across any evidence suggesting the husband’s role in the incident.”
