Kerala’s minority politics is entering a new realm, says CPI (M) at state conference
Speaking to the media during the CPI(M) state conference, which began in Kollam Thursday, CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan said an organisational report had been presented.

Taking note of the “anti-Muslim sentiments” among Kerala’s Christian population, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said Thursday that the state’s minority politics “is entering to a new realm”.
Speaking to the media during the CPI(M) state conference, which began in Kollam Thursday, CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan said an organisational report had been presented. In it, the party appreciated the second Pinarayi Vijayan regime, saying that it gave shelter to people at the time of crisis, implemented the promises and protected the state’s secular culture, he said.
“The media unleashed a campaign that the government is facing anti-incumbency. But the recent by-election at Chelakkara (where the CPI(M) retained its seat in the November polls) showed that there is no anti-incumbency sentiment against the second LDF regime,” he said. “In the 2021 elections LDF got 99 out of 140 seats. Next elections, the LDF is looking at a better result. CPI(M) will watchfully take ahead the organisational machinery imbibing this political situation…Wrong tendencies will be eliminated.”
Govindan also referred to the state of minority politics in Kerala. “In the past, the IUML (Indian Union Muslim League) had tried to join hands with religious organisations. Now, they are getting into alliance with advocates of religious nationalists. IUML has joined hands with organisations such as SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami. Congress is the beneficiary of this extreme Muslim politics,” he said.
On the other hand, he claimed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh had “shaped” the Christian Alliance for Social Action (CASA) – an outfit that “stressed on anti-Muslim sentiment”.
“CASA has announced the plan to have a political party. By spreading anti-Muslim sentiments, CASA is trying to create hatred of Muslims among Christians. It’s part of a move to create a situation that’s favourable for RSS. As part of encouraging identity politics in Kerala, the BJP (the Bharatiya Janata Party) is dividing the people by caste and then bringing them together communally,” he said.
Apart from the organisational report, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented a draft called ‘New Ways for New Kerala’, which was a continuation of a draft presented in the previous state conference in 2022. That draft highlighted the merits of private investment in higher education.
According to Govindan, the latest draft highlighted two methods of job creation — promoting entrepreneurship and strengthening the industrial network.
“The party’s stand is to allow capital investment for projects. The political decision of the CPI(M) stems from the realization that there is a vote for development,” he said.
