Launching his campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Gujarat BJP president C R Paatil addressed an event organised by the Samast Uttar Bhartiya Samaj in Surat and asked the attendees to tell their friends and relatives back in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and other states to vote for the BJP in the upcoming polls. He said the aim was to ensure a victory margin of 5 lakh votes for each party candidate.

Addressing the gathering on Sunday evening, Paatil said, “In the municipal corporation, we have 93 BJP councillors and 12 others who switched over from the AAP, adding up to 105 councillors out of the total 120. This shows the people’s satisfaction with the work done by the party. We won 156 seats in the last Assembly elections (out of 182) and in another 20 seats our candidate lost the election by less than 5,000 votes. We have to work in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and win all 26 seats. The winning margin of each candidate should be 5 lakh.”

“You all have come to Surat for livelihood from different states in northern India. Be prepared for January 2024. The Ram Temple will be opened and you have to visit. When you visit your native place, talk to your family, relatives, friends, and classmates and tell them to support the BJP candidate and get them elected in the Lok Sabha polls,” Paatil said.

The programme was organised on Sunday evening in the Godadara area to felicitate the newly appointed Surat Mayor Daxesh Mawani, standing committee chairman Rajan Patel, and ruling party leader Shashiben Tripathi.

Paatil further added, “We worked on the no reputation formula, to develop new leadership cadres and through this formula in the past, over 1,500 new candidates were elected in the municipal corporation, taluka panchayats and district panchayats, and they were given new responsibilities. In our party, the last person (in the grassroots) can get a chance to contest the municipal elections, Assembly elections or parliamentary elections. Nobody knows when his or her luck will come.”

Praising PM Narendra Modi’s initiative to give 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and Assembly seats, Paatil said, “Opposition leaders had also appreciated the move, and they supported the bill. This shows that if any leader does not get a chance to contest an election, the doors are open for his wife also and she may get the ticket.”

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is ruled by the BJP and recently — after completion of 2.5 years — new leaders were given the responsibilities of mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairman and its members as well as chairpersons of different committees.

“We have made Sashiben Tripathi (BJP councillor, Godadara) the ruling party leader, a post which was earlier held by Amit Singh Rajput. This is the first time that a non-Gujarati woman has been given such a post in the history of SMC. I want to say that her husband Dharmatma should not sit with her in her cabin at SMC. She should take decisions independently and sort out issues faced by the locals,” the BJP chief said.

The event was attended by state Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Cabinet minister Mukesh Patel, MLAs Sandeep Desai, Sangeeta Patil, Manubhhai Patel, and others including Surat city BJP president Niranjan Janjmera.
