Surat, Aravalli, Kutch teachers honoured with Sister Nivedita awards

Congratulating the teachers, Prof Vachhrajani said they exemplify excellence and are the kind of teachers the society needs today.

An advocate who became a teacher to follow her passion and started the tradition of a convocation for pre-primary children, a teacher who dedicated his life to the cause of primary education of tribal children and a principal who rebuilt his secondary school after the 2001 Kutch earthquake and turned it into a best school were conferred with Sister Nivedita Shreshtha Shikshak Awards, in Rajkot on Thursday.

At a ceremony organised at Institute of Quality Education in Rajkot, Alpa Desai, Kanu Panchal and Kirtikumar Thakkar were conferred with the best teachers awards instituted by Sister Nivedita Foundation (SNF), a city-based charitable organisation which has been working in the field of education since 1967. They were handed over citations, a trophy and cheques worth Rs 20,000 each by Gijubhai Bharad, noted educationist of Rajkot, Prof Bhadrayu Vachhrajani, vice-chancellor of Lokbharti University and Kaushik Mehta, former editor Gujarati daily Phulchhab.

Desai (55) is the principal of Smt Parvatiben Desai Vidyakunj, Surat, a pre-primary school run by charitable organisation Vanita Vishram.

After obtaining degrees in commerce and law, she underwent training to become a teacher and also did certificate courses in child care and training, music and became a teacher. She has been serving as principal of this school since 2012 and organises a convocation for children who complete their kindergarten. Not only that, she runs a library to engage parents and enlist their support and cooperation in the education of children.

Panchal (52) is the principal of Vinoba Ashramshala, a primary school in Vadhthali village in Meghraj taluka of Aravalli district. He joined this school as a teacher in 2004 and also became rector of the hostel of the school.

He was promoted as principal of this school in 2013 but he continued as rector also so that he can take full care of and remain in constant touch with tribal children studying in the school, SNF said.

Thakkar (53), on the other hand, has been serving as principal of Bhadai Secondary School, in Bhadai Moti village in Mandvi taluka of Kutch district since 1996.

Building of this school was damaged in the 2001 earthquake but Thakkar continued classes for students under the shade of trees in the campus, persuaded the government for a new building and added amenities with contribution from the public. He teaches students for extra hours to ensure that they do well in the board examinations.

Congratulating the teachers, Prof Vachhrajani said they exemplify excellence and are the kind of teachers the society needs today.

“They not only have samarthya (ability) but samarpan (dedication) also,” he said.
