Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off Gujarat’s first intra-state Vande Bharat train to connect Ahmedabad, the commercial hub of the state, to Rajkot and Jamnagar — the two biggest cities in the Saurashtra region —on Sunday.

The Ahmedabad-Jamnagar Vande Bharat train will depart from Ahmedabad at 5:55 pm every day except Tuesday, arrive at Rajkot at 9:12 pm and reach Jamnagar at 10:35 pm. From Jamnagar, it will depart at 5:30 am every day except Wednesday, arrive at Rajkot at 6:25 am and reach Ahmedabad at 10:10 am.

The inaugural run of the train was virtually flagged off by PM Modi. In Jamnagar, Poonam Madam, the BJP MP from Jamnagar, showed the green flag to the train. In Rajkot, Gujarat’s Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel, Tourism Minister Mulu Bera, Social Justice and Empower Minister Bhanuben Babariya, MPs Mohan Kundariya and Ram Mokariya and Rajkot Mayor Nayna Pedhadiya welcomed the train by showering flowers on it.

The Jamnagar-Vadodara intercity train departs from Jamnagar at 4:45 am, arrives in Rajkot at 6 am and reaches Ahmedabad at 10:30 am. Vande Bharat covers the 332-km distance between Jamnagar to Ahmedabad in 4 hours 40 minutes while the Intercity takes around 5 hours 45 minutes.

The fare for a one-way trip with refreshment from Rajkot to Ahmedabad will be Rs 810 for travelling in chair car class and Rs 1,370 for travelling in executive class. The fair from Jamnagar to Rajkot will be Rs 440 and Rs 835 respectively and from Jamnagar to Ahmedabad, it will be Rs 955 and Rs 1,790 respectively. The train will have a total of eight coaches, including seven of chair car class and one of executive class. The executive class coach will have 52 seats. C1 and C7 coaches have 44 seats each while the rest five coaches have 78 seats each. In all, the train has the capacity to seat 530 passengers.

“Facilities on board the train are like we see in trains of foreign countries. So far, I have seen Vande Bharat trains on TV only and I am travelling on board one for the first time. I feel facilities are actually better than what we see on TV,” Bera told journalists during the inaugural run of the train.

The fare for the Second AC class in the Vadodara-Jamnagar Intercity train for a one-way journey without catering services from Rajkot to Ahmedabad is Rs 435.

“There are no trains in operation which can compare with Vande Bharat. Travelling on board a Vande Bharat train is similar to a vista dome train,” a public servant who travelled on the train said, adding, “But this train is apparently meant for class and not for mass as the fares suggest.”
