Talking to The Indian Express,Vishwas Pandhare,DCP (Traffic) on Tuesday said,“The proposal to make helmets mandatory in the Pune Cantonment area is under consideration. The implementation of the plan on ground zero is the responsibility of the police. A detailed plan in this regard — of positioning the traffic cops to keep a watch on defaulters will have to be chalked out. Further, this will require additional manpower, which we do not have at the moment.”

The police authorities said they have received a proposal to impose a fine of Rs 500 on riders who break the rule. “We will have to see how this fits into the legal framework. Till now,our approach has been to spread awareness. The initiative to use helmets should come from the people themselves,” said Pandhare.
