A video of a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus being recklessly driven with passengers inside shouting for help has gone viral on social media. The police have confirmed that the incident happened on Saturday afternoon on Senapati Bapat Road and that the bus driver was arrested.

PMPML officials said that the bus and the driver belong to a private contractor hired by the transport body to provide service. As per police, the bus with registration number MH 14 HU 5725 was heading towards Chinchwad Gaon when the incident happened at about 1 pm. The bus driver had an argument with a four-wheeler driver.

“Drainage work is going on at the road. To avoid a bump, the bus driver made a sharp move that led to a car driver believing that he had deliberately tried to mow him. The car driver asked him to stop and tried to speak to him at two subsequent traffic signals. Onlookers had fathered at the spot, and the driver, at that point, felt cornered and panicked. To escape, the bus driver reversed the bus, knocking some other vehicles behind the bus. He then raced the bus ahead. Some people forced the driver to stop, detained him and handed him over to the police,” said Assistant Police Inspector Santosh Koli of the Chaturshringi police station.

The PMPML bus driver, identified as Nilesh Dnyaneshwar Sawant, 31, a resident of Atulnagar in Warje Malwadi, was arrested. He was booked under Indian Penal Code sections related to attempt to commit culpable homicide, rash driving and damage to property. A court remanded him to two days of police custody.

“We have information about the bus hitting and damaging at least three vehicles while moving in reverse direction. We do not have information on anyone injured. However, the reckless act could have led to casualties, and that is what provision related to attempted culpable homicide has been invoked,” said Inspector Ankush Chintaman of Chatushrungi police station.

Inspector Chintaman added, “A medical test of the driver was conducted. And blood alcohol levels were nil. We believe he resorted to reckless acts in a fit of rage.”
