The management council of University of Pune has decided to close down 25 of the 30 Master of Education (MEd) colleges affiliated with the university, owing to inadequate teaching staff employed by these colleges.
The five colleges that will continue with MEd courses are Nirmalatai Thopte College of Education Bhor (Pune district),Tilak College of Education (Sadashiv Peth,Pune),Shivaji Education Societys Adhyapak Mahavidyalaya,(Pune),S N D college of Master in Education (Yeola,Nashik) and Maratha Education Societies College of Education (Nashik).
Other institutes will not be allowed to admit students in the first year from this academic year. Many colleges had complaints of not having adequate teaching staff. Some of them also didnt have full-time principals. Over the last one year,we have been asking them to fill up the vacant posts. But we were forced to close down the colleges that do not have teaching staff as per the approved strength, said UoP Vice-Chancellor Wasudev Gade.
Students losing interest in MEd courses could be a reason behind these colleges finding it difficult to fill up seats,he said. Decrease in the number of students had also made many of these colleges financially unviable, said officials.
