(File Photo)Nearly a month after Uber ditched its commission for auto-rickshaw trips, the drivers in Pune are relieved that they can now keep the fare entirely to them. The auto-rickshaw drivers said the change in policy offered a win-win situation as there are no cancellation charges and both the drivers and passengers have the freedom to negotiate the final fare, with Uber staying uninvolved in any disputes that may arise.
The ride-hailing platform, in February, transitioned its auto-rickshaw service to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model under which the app will connect riders with nearby auto-rickshaw drivers, but the service would remain independent from the Uber platform. This meant that riders will have to pay auto drivers directly using cash or UPI, and the fare suggested by Uber would only be a recommendation.
Sunil Patil, an Uber auto-rickshaw driver in the city, said the new policy has brought significant relief for him and his fellow drivers. “Earlier, Uber deducted a significant commission from our fares, leaving us with very little. Now, with 100 per cent of the fare going directly to us, it feels fairer. I can negotiate my fare based on the traffic and the time of the day, which was not possible before. Plus, no more cancellation fees for riders means fewer arguments and smoother interactions,” Patil said.
Promod Waghmare, another driver, said, “Without Uber controlling the payments, I feel like I’m running my own business. Digital payments often cause delays, but with cash or direct UPI transfers, I get my money instantly. Also, negotiating the fare directly with the passenger means I have more say in how much I earn. It’s especially helpful during peak hours when static app fares don’t justify the time and effort.”

Now, I can discuss the fare with the rider upfront,” Kumar remarked. Most passengers understand that traffic and fuel costs vary, and they are willing to pay a fair price. It’s a positive shift that benefits drivers like me,” he said.
