Trupti Bhoir’s Touring Talkies to debut in ‘tamboo talkies’ in cities

Touring Talkies,a movie on makeshift cinemas,will be screened in tents set up for the purpose in pune,mumbai and goa on April 19.

The latest film of actor-producer Trupti Bhoir,Touring Talkies,will be true to its name and release in makeshift cinemas run under tents that can seat around 450 at a time,hence the name tent talkies or tamboo talkies,later this month. Trupti wants to bring the touring talkies experience to the city audience and in a unique experiment,has roped in three tent talkies groups to release the movie in Pune,Mumbai,and Goa.

The film is on makeshift cinemas,an indispensable part of jatras (fairs) that attract around five-six lakh people rural areas of Vidarbha and Marathwada,and Trupti plays a strong-willed woman who storms a male bastion running a touring talkies. She would have shades of Sholay’s Gabbar Singh in the role.

The subject of this Marathi movie was not tough to understand for Trupti,because she had been in close contact with tent or “tamboo” talkies. In fact,in 2007,her film Tujhya Majhya Sansarala was shown in a tent talkies at a jatra in Satara district. The experience inspired her to make Touring Talkies will be released tent talkies in Pune,Mumbai and Goa on April 19 alongside a release in a few city theatres.

Trupti says tent talkies are fast vanishing. From 2000 in 1980s,the number has come down to 32 today and she hopes her film does some good for people associated with touring talkies. “The new generation should at least know what touring talkies are all about before they become history.

The whole experience of watching a film in a tent talkies is something I want to give to city people,” she says.

Obtaining permissions and No Objection Certificate (NOC) from authorities hasn’t been easy for Bhoir. “After running around a lot,I had to approach the culture ministry eventually. I expect NOC by the coming week,” she said.

Vaduj-based Anup Talkies will screen the film in Mumbai,Belgaum-based Krishna Koyna Touring Talkies and Pusesavli-based Laxmi Talkies will screen the film in Pune and Goa respectively.

Each can accommodate 450 people,with each ticket will cost Rs 100.

Anup Jagdale,whose father joined the touring talkies business over 50 years back,said,“This is the first time,touring talkies will travel to the city. We will be taking all our original material,tents,lighting,projectors,ropes and so on,from our village.”

Directed by award-winning director Gajendra Ahire,Touring Talkies stars popular names of Marathi film industry such as Subodh Bhave,Neha Pendse,Milind Shinde and Kishore Kadam. The background score is by Ilayaraja. Shooting began in December 2011 and concluded in May 2012.
