Trick-or-Treat

Party-goers and city clubs are gearing up for the most spooky festival of the year – Halloween.

The jack-o-lanterns are ready, the costumes have been planned, the décor has been worked on. Clubs in the city are set to bring in Halloween with gusto. However, what’s possibly the most important and difficult part of Halloween celebration is to select the outfit or guise to wear for the fest. Though Tanvi Badami’s examinations are knocking on the door, she cannot give the biggest once-in-a-year fancy dress extravaganza a miss. “I dressed as a prisoner last year. Me and my friends had put in a lot of effort into selecting and creating our costumes. This year,we have not been able to plan as strategically as we did last year because of our examinations. But I plan to innovate and create a character of my own with a funny twist, possibly a super hero with a quirk,” says Badami,a student of Symbiosis Institute of Design.

While Badami finds a funny edge to give her superhero character, another Halloween enthusiast Shethin Chacko, who disguised himself as a zombie last year, plans on extending his character by adding an Indian touch to it. “My friend helped me choose my costume last year. I used my sister’s make-up and made the costume at home. I stuck an old zipper near my eye to give it the effect that my eye was zipped open. This year I plan on giving my zombie character more depth,so I will be a zombie fisherman,” says Chacko, excited about collecting accessories to make his character believable.

The themes offered by the clubs in the city play a major role in creating the hype about the costumes. While High Spirits keeps it simple with their Halloween Masquerade Ball, and the recently launched Euriska encourages guests to put on their spookiest best with their Halloween party. “We started the concept of Halloween parties in the city in 2007 and the theme has been constant ever since. Guests can dress up as whatever character they like, but a costume is compulsory. The guests themselves are the highlights of the ball. You’ll see very few people wearing the same costume, but the usual trends are characters from popular movies or do-it-yourself costumes,” says Khodu Irani, owner,High Spirits.

1 Lounge urges their guests to come up with Indian versions of villains like Humara Hannibal,Desi Frankenstein,or Chinki Chucky (possessed doll from the Child’s Play horror film series) or to adopt characters as the greatest Bollywood villans such as Mogambo,Dr.Dan,Shakaal and more. “Last year our theme was Angel or Demon. This year,we have brought an Indian twist to the concept of Halloween by asking our guests to dress up like one of the old school villains or characters like Akshay Kumar from Bhool Bhulaiyya or the possessed woman from 1920,and the likes,” says Vinay Pawar, owner Destiny of Sounds event Management Company, who is organising the party at 1 Lounge.
