The ongoing exhibition at Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal unveils rare collection of artifacts belonging to Mughal,Maratha and Mourya era

About 42,000 manuscripts,1600 miniature paintings belonging to the historic era,maps,books,idols and remains of temples belonging to the Maratha,Mughal or for that matter the Mourya era have been put on display at the exhibition of historic artifacts at Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal (BISM). “The whole idea is to throw open the treasure to common public,which otherwise is kept under tight custody due to the preservation- related aspects of the artifacts,” says Pandurang Balkawde,historian.

A total of over 10 lakh historic documents of which some of the major attractions include— manuscripts in Sanskrit,Modi and Persian languages,the original copy of Gulistaan- a book written by Iranian poet Saadi in 1495 in which he has used gold ink,original copies of orders issued by Akbar,Aurangzeb,Chhatrapati Shivaji and so on. “Some of the rare paintings that have been put on display include original paintings of Adil Shah,Akbar,Shahajahan,Chand bibi,Maratha warrior Nana Phadanvis and over 400 others. The famous picture of Bajirao on a horse is also a part of our collection,” says Anuradha Kulkarni,historian.

The visitors will also get to witness some of the original documents belonging to the Maratha era such as the original book written by one Shankar Sakalakale,on Chhatrapati Shivaji during the latter’s tenure. Besides some of the copies of newspapers that reported about Shivaji Maharaj’s wars with Mughals the display will include books and maps published during the era. “Spread in four halls and managed by over 100 volunteers,prior to this,the exhibition was organised in November last year after a gap of over 30 years,” adds Balkawde.

The exhibition will be open between 10 am to 8 pm at BISM.
