Tejaswini sawant was born in Kolhapur, but she considers Pune to be her home. The 29-year-old rifle shooter who became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the recently held World Championships in Munich was felicitated at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City,Balewadi,on Tuesday.
Balewadi has given me so much. I consider this my home, she said. The function was attended by Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal,Deputy Mayor Prasanna Jagtap and state government officials. She was given a cheque of Rs 1 lakh on behalf of the Pune Municipal Corporation by Rajpal and another cheque of Rs 51,000 on behalf of Pune Congress Committee by city president Abhay Chhajed.
When the shooting range at the complex was upscaled to world class standard for the Commonwealth Youth Games,Sawant began her practice here. She was appointed Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs but according to her,it was her time spent away from the office that paid off. I was given the job but was never in office. I spent all my time at the range and no one ever bothered me about it. The familial relations that I have developed here helped during my training, she said.
Sawant said the Balewadi shooting range is of world standard and that training there was the difference between winning and losing. There was a 50-meter range in Kolhapur but it was not good and thats why the shift to Balewadi proved crucial. Factors like weather condition, wind, exact design of the course matched the one in Munich and helped me give my best.
