Totally Egg-centric

Yellow and White dishes out a wide variety of food items with egg as the main ingredient.

Through the busy lanes of Sadashiv Peth, off Tilak Road, the bright interiors at Yellow and White do full justice to the month-old restaurant’s name. While puns on the word “egg” run through the menu, there are cheeky signboards within the premises as well. The modest 30-seater restaurant obviously has one thing central to its existence — the egg — but doesn’t mean the menu offers no excitement. In fact, the options are plenty.

While there are the regular omelettes,bun-maska omelettes, boiled eggs and French toasts for those who wish to stick to the basics,we decided to be a little adventurous with the Egg chilli and Double topping omelette with a cheese masala topping. And the dishes evoked mixed reactions. The omelette was not exactly out-of-the-box and we expected a lot more than a thin omelette with sparse cheese topping, but the Egg chilli was a showstopper. Boiled eggs, fried, sliced and mixed in a hot gravy of spring onions, red and green chilli and soya sauce had a fiery taste to it. A little while later, another ingredient, jaggery, was revealed, which gave the dish a hint of sweetness to balance out the heat.

Though we weren’t over the top with our experimentation,we did try the Egg burger and the Egg cutlet. Both had a base of vegetables and corn and there wasn’t much of a difference between the two. The Kheema pav is another interesting dish on offer. A tad expensive,it had generous helpings of eggs in various forms and did a good job of substituting meat.

Interestingly enough, there are desserts on the menu too. We weren’t feeling adventurous enough to try the Egg caramel custard or Egg halwa. But one of the willing volunteers among the patrons tried it out and his broad grin sealed the deal that the desserts please the palette.

A word about the cutlery too. In lieu of the traditional steel/wooden plates and knives, they have used dishes and cutlery made of plastic and biodegradable thermoplastics. We thought that was a clever way to have a neat and clean kitchen, with a marked emphasis on hygiene.

On the whole, there are some really unique eating options at the restaurant, given that it has one central ingredient to work around with.
