Use of such cars in recent crimes prompts traffic cops to enforce Rule 100
Taking note that cars with tinted glasses had been used in several recent crimes in the city, the traffic police have decided to ensure vehicles stick to rule 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules,1989.
This rule says windscreen and the rear glass should have a minimum visibility of 70 per cent and side windows a minimum of 50 per cent.
The drive will begin on October 15.
Cars with tinted glass for security purposes will be exempt from the action provided documents authorising such exemption are produced from October 15.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil said,After analysing recent crimes,we found that cars with tinted glasses have been used in robberies, dacoities and rapes. In the past,we did not have the equipment to measure opacity of glasses. Recently,we were handed over six tint meters by Dagdusheth Ganapti Trust to measure opacity. We have decided to start a drive.
Chandmal Parmar who heads the traffic and transportation cell of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture said,Though police have woken up late,it is a positive step. In the backdrop of recent terror activities in the city, the drive is needed. We urge people to follow rules and help police.
Prashant Inamdar,a civic activist working on traffic issues, said,The rule has been there, unavailability of equipment was posing a problem. Not only police even people should be able to see through widows. This will keep a check on any criminal activities like contraband transportation.
Patil added,It has been observed that commercial vehicles like those used by call centres and IT companies for employees use tinted glasses. This will not be tolerated. After October 15,we will take punitive action against drivers.
