In the film Three Musketeers (2011),Athos,Porthos and Aramis, spectacularly steal airship blueprints from Leonardo da Vinci in picturesque Venice. But the exotic locale shown here was far from real, and was created in Pune by a couple of students. Working under the mentorship of their teachers,24-year-old Rahul Khambre and 27-year-old Anuva Iyer, students of the VFX Compositing course at Anibrain XDI,were behind the breathtaking backdrop. “It was thrilling to be directly involved in a Hollywood project,” says Iyer, who is working on some more international projects with Khambre.

The duo has undergone a seven-month training on visual effects and are full-time employees with the organisation now. “All feature films should look good and be a treat to the eyes. We,as compositors, make an effort to beautify each shot,” explains Iyer. “These high-end,three dimensional Hollywood films are generally shot with a green screen background. We create set ups and mask out certain things from the frame to create the perfect backdrop for the scene,” adds Khambre. With processes like rotoscopy, paint and compositing, these master brains can take the actors from a studio set-up to any location they desire. “It is exciting to do something different every time. There’s no monotony,” shares Khambre.

The students admit to having a “tough time working on each of the footage of two to three seconds.” However, they feel good at the end of the day to see their effort lighting up the big screen. “I had booked my tickets for the first show of the first day!” gushes Iyer.

Dedication and hard work helped them sail through. “We had several screening sessions and interviews before we finally bagged this project,” says Khambre.

The duo considers this as a real challenge. “Our work represents the nation as well. So it is a huge responsibility on our shoulders,” says Khambre. “We get an opportunity to work with the biggies of the industry and that, perhaps,is our biggest achievement,” says Iyer.
