Threw stone at my groin, kicked wife in abdomen: Pune road rage victim

I could see that they were drunk, so I honked at them to ensure that they wouldn't ram into my car, recalls the victim

RECALLING THE harrowing ordeal he and his wife endured during the violent road rage incident in Pune’s Pashan area, the victim, a 33-year-old business developer, recounted how an ordinary evening after dinner with friends spiralled into a nightmare, all because he honked at a biker.

The incident took place on the night of April 18 when VP Amaldev and his wife Ketaki, a makeup artist, were on their way home after having dinner with family friends.

“We had gone for dinner to our family friend’s house in Mukundnagar. We left their house at 10.20-10.30 pm and took our usual route via University junction and Pashan Circle. There was traffic at the time on the road. Around 11.15 pm, close to Pashan circle, there were two people ahead of us on an Activa. I could see that they were drunk, so I honked at them to ensure that they wouldn’t ram into my car,” said Amaldev.

“They overtook me and they didn’t let me pass at all. I tried to go in reverse and avoid any confrontation but they did not allow us to move. I got out of the car to talk to them. They started banging on the windows, asking why I honked. It was a scary situation. All I was thinking about was how to avoid it from escalating further. And suddenly someone hit me behind my head with their hand. Then one more person came, which we suspect was the son of one of the two. First thing they did was throw a big rock at my groin and it hurt very badly. They then started hitting me with bamboo sticks. They hit me on the head and I started bleeding from my ear. They broke my nose,” he said.

“Suddenly more people came. At least eight-nine. They started shouting in Marathi ‘Aaj murder hoil ithe’ (there will be a murder here today). When my wife got out of the car, one of the attackers punched and kicked her in the abdomen. While this was happening some passersby who had stopped were just looking and some were taking videos. I kept pleading with them to call the cops, but I think nobody did. They vandalised our car and completely broke all the window glasses and controls of my steering wheel. After multiple attempts, the car started and we just fled from there. Some of them tried to follow up but I was too fast. I drove the car without thinking of the injuries,” Amaldev said.

“We went directly to a relative’s house nearby and parked the car there. The relative then took us to the police station. By this time I was not even in a position to sit because of the multiple injuries. We then went to a nearby private hospital in Aundh where they admitted me to the ICU because of the nature of the injuries.” he added. Both Amaldev and Ketaki have been discharged from hospital.
