In a vibrant display of celebration, thousands gathered across Pune to commemorate the 135th birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on Monday. The city buzzed with activities ranging from floral tributes to educational sessions as residents honored the architect of the Indian Constitution through various community events that highlighted his enduring legacy of equality and social justice.

Blue and white flags fluttered throughout the city as Ambedkarites and followers paid homage to Dr Ambedkar. At the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Museum and Memorial of the Symbiosis Institute, Madhuri Misal, Minister of State for Social Justice and Minority Development, addressed attendees about the continuing relevance of Ambedkar’s vision.

“Dr Ambedkar’s message that education makes a person mature has not yet been able to reach the grassroots of society. Today, many government schemes are available for the development of the marginalised community, but they should reach the community, and for this, I will always be working. It was Babasaheb’s wish that the entire society should remain united, and it is our duty to fulfill it,” said Misal.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) organised multiple celebrations since April 11. Events scheduled on Monday started with Dhamma Pahat and included a concert of songs by multiple artists, including a rendition of ‘Bharat Ka Samvidhan’. Dr Ambedkar’s statue in Pimpri received homage from the PCMC chief and even a helicopter shower, creating a spectacular sight for attendees.

PCMC chief Shekhar Singh highlighted Dr Ambedkar’s influence during his inaugural address. “The work done by Dr Ambedkar for the country is significant. He has shaped the lives of crores of people based on the values of education, equality and justice. From the framing of the Constitution to social movements, the power to bring about change is evident in every work he did. Even today, his thoughts inspire us for an inclusive, accountable and just administration.”

For many participants, the anniversary was deeply personal. “I’ve been celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti for the last 25 years,” shares Harshad Bansode, a participant at the PCMC event. “With each passing year, our understanding of Dr Ambedkar’s principles is getting clearer. The only regret is that even though Dr Ambedkar’s work has benefitted every section of the society, yet I witness that most of the participants are from a so-called ‘marginalised class.’ This must change, and everyone must try to participate in such gatherings.”

Vaishali Bhosale, a participant from Rahatani, noted how Ambedkar’s teachings continue to unite people. “The teachings of ‘Educate, Agitate, Organise’ are in a way practiced here with expert lectures. Ambedkarites and his followers get together no matter how busy one is, as because of Babasaheb’s reservation policies in education and government jobs, marginalised groups had equal opportunities to access the resources.”

Near Pune Station, the celebrations took on additional dimensions of social service. The Dalit Panthers of India, along with Yeshawant Nadagam, founder and president of the Second Dalit Panther Association, welcomed guests and coordinated events at Ambedkar Smarak throughout the day.

The Vishwaratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Vidyarthi Hakka Samiti organised an awareness session on government schemes, a blood donation camp, and an interactive “Chalata Bolta” programme encouraging youth participation.

“The idea is to go beyond celebration, to create awareness and take Babasaheb’s mission forward,” explained Rajratna Balkhande, Samiti President.

Saurabh Tavte from the organising committee lauded the support extended by the Pune Municipal Corporation. “We’re truly satisfied with the arrangements — be it drinking water, washrooms, or the decoration around the statue. It added a dignified touch to the event.”

Adding an educational component to the celebration, Milind Amre, head of the Government Photo Zinco Press and Library, mentioned that a local bookseller offered a 10% discount on Ambedkar-related literature. “By 6 PM, books worth nearly Rs. 80,000 were sold, a heartening rise from last year,” said Amre.

For many citizens like Vipashyana Vikram, the day carried profound meaning. “We see Dr Ambedkar as a divine figure. He gave us our rights and dignity. That’s why we don’t just celebrate, we honour him.”

The smooth functioning of the citywide events was possible through coordinated efforts. Piyush Kuthe, a volunteer, appreciated the Pune Police management. “From transportation to security at every junction, the police made sure everyone reached the venue safely.”

API Vaishali Totewar said that “barricades and traffic diversions were implemented effectively. “We ensured that people could move freely without any problem.”
