Yasmin Kidwais latest documentary profiles 13 expats who have made India their home by choice.
When filmmaker Yasmin Kidwai came back from Mumbai after six years, she found that Delhi had changed a lot. Even her beloved Khan Market, which was just a neighbourhood shopping place, had transformed into a swanky hangout with numerous cafes, bars and retail shops. One of the main things that I noticed was how almost all the establishments were full of foreigners. And not just your same old hippy-type or the spiritual-type tourists I saw that they had moved to India for good, explained Kidwai.
A mother of two,Kidwai has previously worked on documentaries such as Purdah Hai Purdah dealing with the relationship between women and the veil, and Jagrit Itni kin Chanchanna based on the lives of three women from a heavily patriarchal society in Madhya Pradesh.
Ask about her entering into Bollywood, and she explains,I do not make documentaries so that I will get a chance to enter mainstream cinema. For the subjects I choose, documentaries are the perfect way to present them, she says, still adding that she hasnt ruled out Bollywood entirely.
