While one depicts real life atrocities by the police and people on denotified tribes, the other is a story about a small time thief and the third one is based on the recent bomb blast and its aftermath. Puneites are in for a great theatrical expedition from May 28 to 30 as Ahemdabad-based theatre group Budhan Theatre will showcase three plays in the city namely Budhan (May 28),Accidental Death of an Anarchist (May 29) and Charandas Chor (May 30).
The Chhara community in Ahemadabad runs Budhan Theatre that was established by Dr Ganesh Devi in 1998. One of the 192 Denotified and Nomadic Tribes (DNTs) under British rule, the Chharas throughout India face several problems in the society. Although that tag of DNTs was removed in the year 1952,the society hasnt accepted it completely and the Chharas are still ill-treated and seen as suspects in the eyes of the law, says Dakxin Chhara, who has directed Accidental Death of an Anarchist.
The team, which will be performing in the three plays, has 15 children below the age of 15 and 10 youngsters. While some of the youngsters are theatre enthusiasts, others have chosen their own line of career and are working in these plays only for the sake of their community. None of them have gone through any professional training in acting but since the characters that they are playing are very real and themes are based on the community’s experience, the expressions and the emotions come naturally to them, says Chhara.
According to Chhara,it will take time for the society to change its outlook. Infact,we can see the transformation in some areas like there are few youngsters of our community who are doing well in their respective careers and earning a decent amount, which was not possible earlier, says he.
The other two plays ie Budhan and Charandas Chor are directed by Aatish Chhara. He believes that theatre will act as a bridge between the Chhara community and the mainstream society. We want to tell the society that we are not thieves,we are artistes, says he. The group feels happy about the fact that the play Budhan with which they had started their theatre group is the one they are performing in the city.Till now we have give 400 performances of Budhan but since Pune is known for its rich culture and the audience out here love and respects art in different form,we are very excited, he says.
The three plays will be performed at Sudarshan Hall,7 pm onwards
Budhan (May 28) – The play speaks about that current state of Denotified Tribals and the attitude of our legal system towards them.
