On October 21,the RIMS International School and Junior College came alive with the colour and vibrancy of the festival of Diwali. RIMS has students from across the globe – Iran,Korea,Africa,Pakistan,Persia and so on – and each one got a taste of Indian tradition and culture at the Dandiya Night organised at the campus at NIBM Road. The 260 students of Stds I – XI participated wholeheartedly in the festivities.

“ We usually organise a food festival every year on Diwali but this is the first time we organised a Dandiya Night. The main reason behind this event is to show and make the international students aware of our Indian culture,” says Shakuntala Jaisinghani. The event was completely organised by the students. As a part of their semester, students from the four houses – Topaz,Sapphire,Emerald and Ruby – had to prepare various dishes and display it in their respective house stall at the Food Festival held as part of the Dandiya Night. Each house team had six students for the stalls. Tedros,an African student, said,“We made a traditional dish from East Africa called Zigni and also some other cuisines. I made it myself as it is our culture. All the team members contributed for the festival.” Sakshi from Pakistan added,“We as a team prepared all the dishes which included S hammi Kabab,Aaloo ka samosa,Chicken karah and Gajar ka halwa.” Another food stall, which was not amongst the House stalls, had Persian dishes. “I stay alone with my friends here, hence we know how to cook and we often try to experiment while cooking food,” chirped Zainab from this Persian stall which had Salad e’ Shi’Ra’Zi ,Zereshk Polo,Khorak E’ Morgh and Sharbat Ab Lino. There were Italian and Greek stalls too. To judge the delicious dishes,RIMS invited Chefs Anand and Joel from International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM).

For the primary and pre-primary students,a fun fair was organised which had interesting games like Ringing the articles,Tailng the donkey,Bull’s Eye,Feeding Bhim and Lucky 7. Parents of students were also invited and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Rs 10 was charged for playing each game and the money collected will go towards the charities that the institute is associated with. A live band by Anup Paul, the music teacher at RIMS,kept students, teachers and parents dancing with their dandiya sticks. Meher Jadwani, one of the teachers, said,“Through such events,we aim to showcase the talent of our students to their parents and everyone else. Such events have educational as well as entertainment value.”
