Every year,on February 4,World Cancer Day is observed to spread awareness and unite people across the world in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. The theme for World Cancer Day 2012 was ‘Together it is possible’,because it is only by every person, organisation, and government individually doing their part that the world will be able to reduce premature deaths from cancer and other NCDs by 25 per cent by 2025.
Nicknamed The Big C,7.6 million people die from cancer each year globally. Five lakh of those deaths occur in India alone. With a population in excess of 1.2 billion,India has to battle several illnesses. Cancer, which accounts for 5.5 lakh deaths each year,is high on the list. According to WHO,it is estimated that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention.
In India ,cancer is estimated to affect more than 2.5 million people with eight lakh new cases reported annually. However, for more than 70 per cent of the reported cases, the disease is at an advanced stage with patients seeking diagnostic and treatment services, leading to a poor survival and high mortality rate.
Cancer occurs when a group of abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and may lead to tumours in the body. These tumours can affect normal cells functions around it and can damage bodys healthy tissues. As tumours grow, they can interfere with bodys vital systems like immune, digestive, nervous and circulatory systems and release hormones that alter the bodys functions. Tumours that demonstrate limited growth are generally considered benign.
Turmeric can be used to combat liver damage, respiratory disorders and ulcers, says Dr Rangesh Paramesh, head,Drug Discovery,Himalaya drug company. Studies have claimed that curcumin may prevent and slow down the growth of cancerous tumors in the body. Cancer-causing enzymes may also be inhibited by the active constituent.
