College teachers continue their strike even as the State Government has decided to take legal opinion regarding the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission’s (SPC) recommendations on salaries. “The government has called a meeting on Saturday morning during which a legal document will be prepared,” said Atul Bagul, president of Pune University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) which is representing the city’s college teachers.

President of MFUCTO M Sadashivan said it was right on the government’s part to take legal opinion. “However, the meeting in inconclusive and we are hope some constructive decision will be taken on Saturday,” he said. The decision was taken at a meeting — attended by Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope, higher education director R V Kirdak and representatives of Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (MFUCTO) — held in Mumbai on Thursday. Bagul said the government is not ready to grant certain allowances like house rent allowance and conveyance — that are given to state government employees.

Discussions with Tope that went on till Wednesday late evening were also unsuccessful.
