Abhijeet Khandkekar likes his varan bhaat: the Maharashtrian dish is his favourite way to unwind
Pune is a city of food and restaurants, and as a testament to my college days, when I’m on the prowl for food,I generally opt for places that serve quick food and have cheap rates. Some of the places I love to eat at are located at FC Road and JM Road one can get all kinds of food there,be it South Indian, snacks, and so on. Some of the most delicious places I have ever eaten at are Roopali and Vaishali.
Another place I love to visit for food is just off Prabhat Road, near the SNDT circle. This place is great for street food, and being a chaat person,I feel it nigh impossible to not visit this spot whenever I am in town. Another thing that I love to eat at this place is the kulfi.
Then there are certain restaurants that are on the higher side,as far as the prices are concerned, but their food is just amazing. One is Little Italy, where I love the Italian and continental food, pasta in particular. Another place that I enjoy is Polka Dots in Aundh. Apart from the great food, the ambience makes it a great place for dates.
I am an egg-person,and I love to have eggs for breakfast whether as omelettes,or as scrambled eggs,I love them all. One place where I make it a point to have breakfast is Good Luck cafe at Karve Road. When I go there,I usually have the same order cheese bun omelette with chocolate milk. Sometimes,I also pick up a caramel custard there. Apart from eggs,I also have typical Maharashtrian breakfast dishes like poha and upma. I don’t mind a more subtle breakfast either, often starting my day with bread and jam.
Thanks to my job,I have had to do without home-cooked food for long stretches, but there is nothing I like more than to come home after a tiring day and eat varan bhaat rice and dal, with a slice of lemon and a generous amount of ghee. A typical Maharashtrian dish, eating varan bhaat is also one of my favourite ways to unwind.
I have,in the past, tried to keep myself on a healthy diet, but because of my hectic schedule,it is almost impossible to stick to it. The sets, more often than not, serve oily, unhealthy food which is why I carry some food with me to work, like sandwiches or biscuits. It’s not the healthiest diet ever, but it’s better than being wholly dependent on the food on the sets. As for my part,I try,as much as possible,to eat food that has proteins and vitamins, and I try to avoid junk food as much as possible.
I don’t love any particular cuisine,or have any favourite cooking style that I swear by. I love all sorts home food,continental,Italian,Indian-chinese,Punjabi,chaat. For me,food is all about the taste. I don’t go for price,or ambience,or even brand-name,as so many people do. I have no high-flying choices. If I feel the food is tasty,I come back again and again.
