TALKING POINT with pawan malhotra

I had consciously distanced myself from the industry because I was not enjoying the turn the industry had taken.

Life comes full circle as he makes a telly comeback after a decade with Laagi Tujhse Lagan

You’re returning to television after a long hiatus.
I had consciously distanced myself from the industry because I was not enjoying the turn the industry had taken. Besides,as an actor,I wanted to be a part of various forms of the visual medium and genres. I didn’t want to take up projects where people should not see and forget what I have done. I don’t mind if they don’t like the show but it should leave an impression on them. But as they say, once an actor, always an actor. I want to work till I can.

Did Paresh Rawal, who is producing the show, bring you in?
No,Colors approached me and they informed me that Paresh is producing the show. That definitely helped since his name lends credibility to the show.

You have taken to playing negative characters, what with your roles in Black Friday and Delhi-6 and now the television show?
I would say my character in Delhi-6 had its positive points too. Though the two brothers were not talking to each other,at the time of need, they do come together. But I am indeed thoroughly enjoying playing the character in Laagi Tujhse Lagan. I play an uncouth evil cop whom most people will regret meeting in real life. The show is about a girl who is ridiculed because she is ugly and dark. I make matters worse for her.

Having been in the television industry for nearly two decades, what’s your opinion on the way the industry has evolved?
The first leg of change in the industry started with Hum Log,Buniyaad and Nukkad. Then it evolved into something where all you could notice was the saris and bindis of the women on the show. One can criticise it as much as one wants but at the end of the day, people were watching it. They have the option today of switching the channel. Today, again,a message comes across through the various shows.

You have been more visible on the big screen over the last few years.
I would say I am being noticed more due to the kind of films I took up. I am now doing roles that I enjoy doing and at the same time sure that the audience will like seeing me do.

Would you agree that your character in Black Friday proved to be the turning point in your career?
I’m sure it has helped because after long a film came by that made an impact in all aspects of filmmaking. Now I hope to do some good work with Road to Sangam,Parmeet Sethi’s film under the Yash Raj banner and Saeed Mirza’s next.
