Lt. Col. (retd) Madhav Gangadhar Athavale on Friday launched his book Gerontology practice in daily life,a guide to dealing with aging without compromising on everyday activities.

Aging with ease

Lt. Col. (retd) Madhav Gangadhar Athavale on Friday launched his book Gerontology practice in daily life,a guide to dealing with aging without compromising on everyday activities. Born in Pune,Athavale joined the Army corps of Engineering in 1956. His practical approach to the problems of aging is the inspiration for the book. “The book is purely based on science and does not preach. It’s for all age groups to read,” said the author. The book is divided into two parts. While the first explains the subject matter of the book,the need and present scenario of elderly,the second discusses various plans to face problems and gives practical guidelines. The book is in English and Marathi.

The Wheelchair roll

Akash Kumbhar,a paraplegic,recently travelled from Kolhapur to Pune to raise funds for people suffering due to the drought. Kumbhar started his campaign on April 13 from Kolhapur bus stand and covered 216 kms to Pune,reaching the city on April 18. Travelling 104 km on his wheelchair,Kumbhar had to switch to taking the car for the remaining distance due to bad roads between Satara and Shirpur. Along the way he managed to collect Rs 23,700,which he plans to give to the people of Marathwada. He had earlier set a record of longest walk by a disabled person,at the 27th Pune International marathon in December 2012. He had walked 42.5 kms.
