“Investigation has revealed that the student has two roommates. Because both of them were out, he had not locked the door," said Senior Inspector Girish Dighavkar.Pune Police launched a probe after a 24-year-old student pursuing an MBA course in Pune sustained chemical burns after an unidentified suspect allegedly threw an acidic substance at him when he was asleep in his hostel room.
The student, identified as Ashish Das, hails from Odisha and is in the second year of his MBA degree course at Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies in Khadki. The incident took place in a boys hostel of the institute located in Range Hills area around 9 pm on March 23.
“According to the student, an unidentified person entered his room around 9 pm on Saturday night when he was asleep and threw a chemical substance at him because of which he sustained chemical burns on his hand and back. The case was reported to us as a medico-legal case on Sunday after the hospital where he was being treated informed us.” said Senior Inspector Girish Dighavkar of Khadki police station.
“Investigation has revealed that the student has two roommates. Because both of them were out, he had not locked the door. The suspect came into the room and used the plastic mug in his washroom to throw the substance at him, he has said. The case was registered and a probe was launched. The student is out of danger and even appeared for an ongoing exam today. There are no CCTV cameras on the fourth floor of the hostel where the room is located. We are yet to identify the suspect. We will be recording statements of everyone who was present on the hostel campus at the time. We have sent the samples of the chemical for forensic analysis. Primary observations suggest that the chemical is acidic in nature,” Dighavkar added.
“The institute is investigating and cooperating with the police in their investigations. Most of the students had gone home for Holi and very few students were in the hostel so they were interrogated,” said Dr Vidya Yeravadekar, Pro Chancellor, Symbiosis International (Deemed University).
