Studying for long hours, appearing for scores of mock tests helped students score 99 percentile in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main Paper-I exam, results of which were declared by the National Testing Agency late on Tuesday night.

Soham Pate, a student with M Prakash academy, scored 99.98 percentile in the exam. “I used to study in the morning and evening and take a break in the evening to do yoga. I used to give mock tests every alternate weekend in Class 11 and started taking more of them in Class 12. The strategy will be similar for JEE Advanced,” said Pate who is setting sights on securing admission to IIT Bombay and pursuing computer science. Pate’s elder brother is also an engineer from BITS Pilani.

The JEE Main result is declared in percentile, which describes how a score compares to other scores in the same test. Many other students also emphasised the importance of mock tests, like Satyam Singh from Pune who scored 99.90 percentile. A student of Prime Academy, Singh said, “I really credit my friends, teachers, parents for the success. While studying, I had a goal rather than a time setting. Whatever was taught on a day, I would finish practice modules for that at home the same day. Later I started doing two mock tests everyday and that would even take 12 hours sometimes.”

On his preparations for the future, Singh said, “JEE Mains requires speed but JEE Advanced requires deeper analysis. I will try to reduce mock tests and do more analysis. I am aiming for IIT Bombay or IIT Madras. I am inclined towards computers science, but I am open to other specialisations as well.”
Adheesh Nakhate, a student at the same coaching centre, achieved 99.74 percentile. “I study from 10am to 7pm everyday. I also work out regularly. I really focus on the mock tests and what I was doing right and wrong. I was focused on calculations, speed, and the mock test experience.”

“I plan on doing a lot of hard work for JEE Advanced, for which I will be focusing a lot more on complex and lengthier questions…My first preference is definitely IIT Bombay, where I want to pursue mechanical and aerospace engineering,” said Nakhate.

“The support of my teachers and continuous encouragement from my parents helped me achieve this score,” said Anuj Shivprasad Pagar, who scored 99.98 percentile. A student at Bakliwal Tutorials, Pagar said mock tests, timely doubt clearance, highly guided training were the key to his success.

One of the most well-known competitive exams in India, the JEE exam is conducted for admissions to prestigious engineering and science institutions. The top 2.5 lakh scorers in the JEE Main exam qualify for the JEE Advanced paper.
