Standing committee meet adjourned over bypoll code

Bypoll to the Khadakwasla Assembly segment, necessitated following the death of MNS MLA Ramesh Wanjale, will be held on October 13.

Voicing concern over the model code of conduct for the Khadakwasla Assembly bypoll hurting development work all over the city when the civic polls are to be held early next year, elected representatives of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday adjourned the standing committee and the all-party leaders’ meetings demanding that the Election Commission restrict the model code for Khadakwasla segment instead of bringing the whole city under its purview. Bypoll to the Khadakwasla Assembly segment, necessitated following the death of MNS MLA Ramesh Wanjale, will be held on October 13.

“The election code restricts any policy decision of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and hampers development work of the civic body,” said Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal.

He said the all party leaders meeting was adjourned without proceeding with discussion on issues. “Everyone expressed unhappiness over the election code hampering development work when civic polls are round the corner,” Rajpal said adding that he would write to the election commissioner to restrict the election code only for the area that falls in the assembly segment.

Standing committee chairman Ganesh Bidkar said the civic administration has conveyed to the committee that no decision can be taken because of the election code and adjourned the meeting. “I have written to the election commission to apply the election code for the area that goes for the bypoll. It is going to delay of development projects of the city,” he added.

New deadline for panel views

Accepting such a demand from citizens, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election department has extended the deadline for filing suggestions on and objections to the newly constituted panel system for the civic polls. The earlier deadline was September 5. Now citizens can file suggestions and objections by September 17. The election commission has constituted 76 panels for the 152 seats of the PMC.
