Professor Sunil S Bhagwat of the Institute of Chemical Technology has been appointed the director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. He would replace Dr Jayant Udgaonkar who was at the helm of the institute since November, 2017.
Bhagwat joined the prestigious institute in 1986 and holds a PhD in chemical technology. His expertise, as per his profile on the institute’s website, lies in the areas of Interfacial Science and Engineering, Energy and Exergy Engineering, Computer Process Simulation and Artificial Neural Networks.
The professor holds 12 and more patents and teaches courses on chemical engineering, interfacial science and engineering, thermodynamics of phase equilibria energy, and energy engineering among others. He is associated with many ongoing industry-sponsored projects and has lent his expertise to already completed projects of importance. With a vast experience in original research with him, Bhagwat has published more than 100 papers in both national and international journals.
According to the institute website, Bhagwat is a “frequent resource person on numerous occasions for refresher courses and faculty development programmes conducted by various universities in the country for chemistry as well as industrial chemistry and chemical engineering subjects”. He has been elected the best teacher by the students of ICT more than 10 times and won the Prof Rajadhyaksha Best Teacher Award.
Professor Bhagwat would be heading IISER, Pune, which was founded in 2006. Declared an institute of national importance in 2012, IISER Pune has spearheaded numerous projects and researches in many fields of fundamental sciences. The institute runs a five-year integrated (BS-MS) masters course as well as PhDs in various streams.
