Basketball: Nahata takes Pune into semifinals
Rishabh Nahata scored 16 points as Pune defeated Kolhapur 60-33 to enter boys semifinals of the Vinayak Nimhan Cup Maharashtra State Inter District Youth (under-16) basketball championship at the Balewadi Sports Complex on Friday. Rishabh enjoyed support from his teammates with Kartik Kenjale scoring 12 and Vrushabh Atawane 11.Other teams to qualify for the semifinals were the Nashik boys who defeated Mumbai South East 49-39 and among the girls Mumbai Central,Satara and Thane.
Boys: quarterfinals: Pune 60 (Rishabh Nahata 16,Kartik Kenjale 12,Vrushabh Atawane 11) bt Kolhapur 33; Nashik 49 (Shivam Dube 14,Aditya Asthekar 10) bt Mumbai South East 39 (Imran Siddiqui 16,Nadeem Khan 13). Girls: quarterfinals: Mumbai Central 45 beat Nashik 36 (Shraddha S 11,Jayanti Jugad 10); Satara 30 (Surbhi Bansode 11) bt Aurangabad 13; Thane 39 (Priyanka 10) bt Mumbai North 30.
Tennis: Kadhe loses in quarters
Arjun Kadhes impressive run in the $15,000 ITF Futures tennis tournament in Chennai came to a halt when he went down 6-2,6-2 to seventh seed Hyun-Woo Nam of Korea on Thursday. The Pune lad,who was a quarterfinalist in the French Open junior doubles,came through qualifying and won his first ever ATP singles points by defeating Vivek Shokeen in the first round. In the second round,he caused another upset,defeating second seed VM Ranjeet. But the 19-year-old Kadhe had no answers to Nams strong baseline play and bowed out in his maiden quarterfinal appearance at this level. In the doubles,Kadhe and Tejas Chaukulkar reached the second round,after beating Chinese Taipeis Kaun-I Lee and Jui Mao 6-4,3-6 (10-7).
