Nishad Chaugule scored a break of 55,the highest of the tournament so far,during the second frame of his 55-17,69-36,62-80,67-35 second round win over Ranjeet Negi in the PYC-Green Baize knockout snooker tournament on Tuesday. In other matches,Aakash Padalikar sneaked into round three after a closely-fought 11-42,55-59,63-30,84-43,56-50 win over junior national player Arantxa Sanchis.
Kumthekar enters last four
Sixth seed Kaivalya Kumthekar came through a tough test against Kapil Mehta,prevailing 21-15 16-21 21-10 in 35 minutes to enter the semifinals of the sub-junior (under-17) boys’ category of the Pune district badminton championships at the Modern PDMBA Sports Complex,Shivajinagar,on Tuesday. Kaivalya’s semifinal opponent will be second seed Amey Tilloo,who beat seventh seed Nandan Gajendragadkar 21-13,21-16.
Badminton: Top seeds progress
Boys’ and girls’ top seeds Sudhanshu Medsikar and Revathi Devasthale had little trouble progressing to the quarterfinals of the Pune district badminton championships here on Monday,with straight-games wins over Nihar Pradhan and Aishwarya Bhujbal respectively. Devasthale was in particularly rutless form,dropping just five points over the course of her 21-1,21-4 victory. Other seeded players,however,didn’t have it so easy. Chirag Ramdas,seeded eighth among the boys,went down 20-22,21-19 to Viren Deshpande in his pre-quarterfinal.
IT football: Elton in sizzling form
Elton Lima was in sensational goalscoring touch,as he fired EDS Mphasis to successive wins over HSBC and Cognizant in the Infosys-Pune FC inter-IT football tournament at the Infosys ground in Hinjewadi on Saturday. He scored twice in a 2-1 win over HSBC before bagging a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Cognizant. EDS Mphasis ensured themselves a quarterfinal place with their unbeaten record in Group B.
