So close,yet so far

She has been in the city for the past five years, diligently studying. Now in her final year,LLB student Sonam Choden, who hails from Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, has a set of dreams in her mind and she can’t wait to start working towards realising them. “The two reasons why I came to India to study were first, this course (law) is not taught in my country and second,India offers great opportunities for higher studies,” Indian Law Society (ILS) student says.

Choden finds a lot of similarities between India and Bhutan. “Many of the festivals that we celebrate in our country are quite similar to Indian ones,as far as both traditions and beliefs are concerned. During the festive season,we dress up in our ethnic clothes – the women dress in Kiras, which are like long gowns, and the men dress in Ghos, which are similar to a Scottish kilt.”

According to her,the similarity also extends to the kind of food that the two countries have. “Both countries like their food to be very chilli. In Bhutan,we cook a special dish, called Emadatshi, which consists of chillies and cheese. In general, however, the taste of the two countries are quite similar.” As far as religion is concerned,Bhutan follows only one religion – Buddhism. “We pray in our temples in our mother tongue,a language called ‘Lhakhanges’,” she says.

Bhutan,a constitutional democratic monarchy, has a very unique architectural style, she says. The women also weave their own clothes and are very skilled in the arts like wooden handicrafts. Choden claims that she doesn’t miss her country, but then admits that she feels homesick when she is ill. “When I’m down,I really miss my family,” she says.

And what plans after she finishes her law course? “Well,I friend Kelzang Dema and I plan to work for an NGO and do social work for the betterment of the society in Bhutan. We also plan to open an orphanage in the country,” she says.
