Sheer poetry
For the crowds that trooped in from across the city to Amanora township’s amphitheatre to listen to Amitabh Bachchan recite his father Harivanshrai Bachchan’s poems on Monday,it was an evening that will remain etched in their minds for a long to come. Arriving at the venue at characteristically dot on time, the megastar dressed in cream, took to stage immediately after three scintillating dance performances by disciples of Rohini Bhate-all also based on senior Bachchan’s verses. Showering praise on the troupe’s presentations and requesting a CD of it so that he could ‘show it to my family back home’ Bachchan began with the well-known Madhushala, singing it with perceptible feeling. From then on,the star went on from poem to another for the next hour-Tum Gao mera gaan,Nayi leekh,Buddha aur Naachghar,Khoon Ke chappe and so on- interspersing them with delightful little anecdotes that threw light either on the thoughts behind the compositions or his father’s will power and attitude towards life. Ending the session with yet another enthralling rendition of Madhushala and on the audience’s demands a few lines from the powerful Agneepath,it sure was a well-deserved standing ovation that Bachchan received from the audience at the jam-packed amphitheatre.
