Skin care in the rainy season is all about keeping dry from outside and being well hydrated within

Rain always brings along with it,its old friend ‘humidity’ during the monsoons. Though it’s fun to feel the rain splash on your face and hair, the morning-after may not be a favourable sight. However, skin care during the monsoon needn’t be too elaborate or stressful. Some basic tips can help one to maintain a healthy skin, free of excessive dryness and infection.

Dr Sachin Kashid,a skin specialist with Indrayani Skin and Cosmetic Clinic, says,“The biggest problem during the monsoon is the humidity. To counter the dryness, one should use a good,non-oily,moisturiser and use soaps which contain glycerine. It’s important to drink plenty of water to keep oneself well-hydrated. Dandruff can be persistent in the season,so while traveling out its better to cover one’s hair and all other open areas.”

Some home-based solutions for dandruff can be a wash with lemon or yoghurt. For the ones willing, eggs are proven conditioners for the hair. Muddy water in puddles are germ hotbeds, and if you happen to be a fond walker in the rain,it is prudent to wear toe-covering foot- wear. “Fungal infections are common in the wet season,so keeping the skin and clothes dry is essential. Anti-fungal drying powders help prevent and cure such infections,” advises Dr Shaam Agrawal,a skin specialist. He says further,“Another problem can be that of insect bites,in which case the use of insect-repellant creams is a good idea. Teenagers may face an increase in acne as the pores get blocked due to the humidity. A good weekly scrub and some anti-acne cream should work fine for them. In case of ring-worm and other infections,it’s advised to consult a skin specialist if itching and discomfort persist.”

Scaling of the skin is another common complaint in the rain. The solution for this is again a good, deep moisturiser. Make-up chokes the skin pores,so a toned down look works well in the weather. Lovely Singh,a city-based model says,“As it gets very sweaty in the season, regular washing of the face is imperative. Rose water and milk are excellent natural cleansers. I use minimal make-up during the rains, and stick to lighter shades. A weekly,half-an-hour sitting with coconut oil does wonders to the skin and hair. And of course, drink as much water as you can.”

The key to good skin in the season is to make sure the clothes and shoes are not moist. The benefits of drinking lots of fluids cannot be over-stated in this season. It ensures glowing,well-hydrated skin which needn’t shy away from soaking in the rains.
