SIO warns stir against poor scholarship scheme

The Students’ Islamic Organisation has threatened a statewide agitation next month if the pending amount of scholarships to minority students is not released by October 31.

The Students’ Islamic Organisation has threatened a statewide agitation next month if the pending amount of scholarships to minority students is not released by October 31. It has also demanded setting up of a grievance redressal cell at each college to resolve the scholarship issues.

At a press conference organised by SIO on Monday,Nadeem Shaikh, coordinator, scholarship cell, said that the students of the academic year 2011-12 are yet to receive the scholarship amount. Post-matric scholarship is given to the meritorious from Class XI to PG students belonging to minority communities. The Central government had sanctioned an amount of Rs 31.06 crore for 48,505 students in the academic year 2011-12.

“Although the Directorate of Higher Education, the nodal agency in Maharashtra had declared the list of deserving candidates last month, six months later the scheduled date, nobody has got the amount,” Shaikh said.

“Even after such a delay, the student list has a lot of mistakes such as students’ account number, bank name etc,” Shaikh said.

SIO is demanding the immediate setting up of a grievance redressal cell in each college and also at the joint director and director of higher education’s office as students are facing many problems. “Names of colleges and courses are not available on scholarship website. The institutes’ login ID and password are not matching. There is a lack of coordination between various levels of the concerned staff. The 87,000 students who will fill the forms has no place to file a complaint,” said Mohammed Ali,campus secretary,SIO.

SIO has also demanded that December 31 be made the last date of submission of forms. “Earlier the last date of form submission was December 31,but suddenly, officials have declared October 31 as the last date and this is creating a lot of confusion,” Ali said.
