A group of amateur photographers capture life in the wilderness of Kenya

This “Great Migration” has been called one of the most spectacular natural spectacles of the planet. Thousands and thousands of wildebeest and zebra rush in hordes between Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya, creating an overwhelming visual experience that observers can never forget. This year, watching the migration, was a group of amateur sharpshooters. As the animals raced towards their destination, the photographers were actively shooting their every mood and action. The resulting images will be on display as part of the exhibition titled Untamed Kenya .

Presented by Foliage Outdoors,a company that organises wildlife and adventure holidays, the exhibition showcases 80 images of life in the wilderness of Kenya. “We have undertaken several trips to Kenya recently. Participants from these trips have contributed images for the exhibition,” says Rahul Rao,director,Foliage Outdoors. He adds that the images on display have passed through an extensive selection process. On display is a wide range of flora and fauna, from game reserves such as Amboseli National Park and Samburu National Park, and the plains of Masai Mara. Vivid works capture the breathtaking beauty of lakhs of flamingos that congregate at Lake Nakaru every year.

The photography exhibitions by Foliage Outdoors are a regular feature on the city’s art calendar and eagerly awaited by nature and photography enthusiasts. The exhibitions, till now, focussed on nature reserves, sanctuaries and other green spots in India, and Kenya is the first international one. “The motive behind these safaris is to educate people and spread awareness. They should get the chance to witness these spectacular sights while they still exist,” Rao says. Among all the images, those of the Great Migration are the clear highlights. “Our trips usually extend for eight days. Our most recent one was between July and August in Kenya. This is the period of the Great Migration and it was truly a spectacle,” says Rao.

The participating photographers include Rao,Abhay Ghanekar (director,Foliage Outdoors),Deepak Kulkarni,Vikram Potdar,Rakesh Dhareshwar and Aamod Gupte. “The youngest is 13 and the eldest is in his late 40s,” Rao adds.

(The exhibition will be held at Yashwantrao Chavan Art Gallery,Kothrud, between November 3 and 7. Time: 10 am-8 pm )
