Ahead of Amit Shah’s visit to Raigad on the death anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji on Saturday, BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale, who is the descendent of the Maratha ruler, said Friday that he urged the Union Home Minister to announce the construction of a Shivaji memorial at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.

“It was decided to have a monument for Maratha king Shivaji in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and we were also present on the occasion. However, the work did not start, most likely due to environmental issues,” Bhosale said in Pune after visiting Phule Wada on the birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule.

Speaking about the 50-acre land at Raj Bhavan, which is next to the Arabian Sea, Bhosale said, “What will the state Governor do with so much land? Part of it can be used for developing the proposed memorial for Maratha king Shivaji. I have already discussed the same with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. I hope that they will declare the same tomorrow at Raigad.”

The MP said he hopes that the Union government will also accept his demand for a law against those making derogatory statements on national leaders. “Those making derogatory remarks against our national heroes and figures should be charged under non-bailable offence and punished,” he said.

The BJP leader said action should be taken against charitable hospitals for not giving free treatment or concessions to patients from poor families. “Charitable hospitals get government land almost free of cost but fail to provide free medical treatment to poor patients,” he alleged.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, minister Chandrakant Patil, NCP MP Chhagan Bhujbal, NCP(SP) executive president Supriya Sule and state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal also visited the Phule Wada separately to mark the birth anniversary of the social reformer.
