Shaikh resigns as PCB vice-president

Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) vice-president Manzoor Nazir Shaikh on Friday resigned from the post, apparently in a bid to prevent other members.

Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) vice-president Manzoor Nazir Shaikh on Friday resigned from the post, apparently in a bid to prevent other members, many of them wanting a shot at the post themselves, from bringing in a no-confidence motion against him.

Sources said opposition to his continuation as PCB vice-president had been brewing, with many of the members saying it was time for him to quit and make way for other members to have a go at the post. They other members have been advocating for a chance to each of them to serve as vice-president.

Cantonment board members have in general been asking for a reduced tenure of vice-presidents to give others an opportunity.

Shaikh,a Congress member, had served as PCB vice-president for seven months after replacing Sangeeta Pawar. His predecessors, however, had got more time in office. Other members from the Congress who are yet to get a chance to be vice-president are Aarti Mahajan,Manoj Bidkar and Karan Makwani.

Sources said that the Congress was in favour of nominating Makwani to the post, although it is known that Mahajan has been more vocal in addressing cantonment problems. Besides,Mahajan had fought the poll as a Congress candidate while Makwani had contested as an independent candidate and joined the Congress later.

According to sources,in the PCB meeting planned on Sunday, besides other issues, election to the office of vice-president will also hold prominence in the discussion.

Shaikh did not give any details but confirmed he had indeed put in his papers.
