Additional sessions judge S S Gadge,on Thursday,granted interim bail to two doctors gynaecologist Makarand Ranade and radiologist Nina Mathrani arrested for allegedly conducting sex determination tests. The duo were rejected bail by a magistrate court on Wednesday,after which they had approached the sessions court through their lawyers Nandu Phadke and Harshad Nimbalkar respectively.
The court cited a Supreme Court order and observed that the maximum punishment for the offense was five years. The court also stated that the duo are not likely to tamper the evidence, said Nimbalkar. Based on these points,the court granted them interim bail against Rs 15,000 each till July 27.
The doctors were arrested on July 2 following a sting operation. Ranade and Mathrani were booked for 19 violations of the PCPNDT (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act,1994 and Rules,1996. Dr Ranade is the owner of Ranade hospital & clinic,Nagnath Par in Sadashaiv Peth and works there as a gynecologist.
Dr Nina is the owner of Namit Diagnostic Centre (X-ray & sonography clinic),Laxmi Road and works there as radiologist/ sonologist/ imaging specialist. It is registered with PMC for conducting ultrasonography (USG) on pregnant women.
Meanwhile,the citys appropriate authority had filed one more case before the judicial magistrate first class on Wednesday. During a surprise raid on June 6,a sonography unit at a hospital on Sinhagad road was found to have flouted various provisions of the PCPNDT Act,1994 and Rules,1996.
The violations included not maintaining proper records,not submitting monthly reports and not obtaining the consent of pregnant women before conducting sonography tests and so on.
A criminal case has been filed against gynaecologist Rekha Kulkarni and owner of the hospital,Uday Kulkarni,said citys appropriate authority Vaishali Jadhav.
