Serial Killers leaves Patient 2nd spot,Logging Out 3rd

On Sunday night,winners of the 48th Purushottam Karandak,an inter-college one act theatre competition,were announced.

On Sunday night,winners of the 48th Purushottam Karandak,an inter-college one act theatre competition,were announced. The top spot was won by MIT College of Engineering’s Serial Killers. The BMCC team was the first runner-up for the play Patient while the third prize went to MMCC for Logging Out. The finals were held Saturday and Sunday at Bharat Natya Mandir,Tilak Road. The finalists included AISSMS College of Engineering,Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology(VIIT),Sinhgad Academy of Engineering,Kondhwa,Sinhgad College of Engineering,College of Engineering Pune (COEP),and Cummins College of Engineering for Women.

Serial Killers presented the issue of unwanted pregnancies in the modern era. “We showcased case studies of three sections of society including IT company couples,teenage couples and slum dwellers,” said writer Shweta Pethkar. Pethkar also won the Best Director award. Aaroh Velankar won the best actor for the same. Mayuri Kanetkar bagged the best actress award for Logging Out.

Logging Out portrayed the relationship between two online friends. “We wanted to show how Western culture can be good only when one is not addicted to it,” said Abhiraj Mokate,the director. The play had only three characters.

The best experimental one act play was awarded to Dumla by Sinhgad Academy of Engineering and Sujay Waghmare from MIT bagged the award for best writer for Prashna Chinha. Best organised team went to Cummins College of Engineering for Women who staged Anvay.

“The Purushottam Karandak is a school in itself. Once graduated from here,winners have a lifetime relationship with acting. Medical and engineering students have a legacy of winning. It always breaks the myth about them being disinterested in acting,” said Rajendra Thakur Desai,an executive committee member of Kaloposak Maharashtra.

During the competition,each group was given a time slot of one hour and they were also responsible for arranging the sets and lights as well. “There were no awards for lighting,music and set. All the awards were particularly for acting,story and writing,” added Hemant Vaidya,the Secretary of Maharashtra Kaloposak. The judges included theatre personality,Kiran Chitre,Nandu Madhav and Dhiresh Joshi of Harishchandrachi Factory. The prize distribution will take place on September 21. Ram Jadhav,the president of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad,will felicitate the winners. The teams performed in front of a packed audience at the finals. Personalities from the acting fraternity like Thakore Desai,Praveen Karade and others were present at the venue. “It is a great opportunity for me to learn and recharge myself with the ‘youth energy’,” said Karade.

Vaidya also announced the expansion of the competition throughout Maharashtra with a Mega Final event to be held on December 24 – 26. “We will have primary rounds in Kolhapur,Jalgaon,Aurangabad,Mumbai and Nashik. The Mega Final aims at establishing ten such centres in the state,” Vaidya added.
