Depicting the journey of the Indus script from the time of its origin till date,Suhash Jamdade’s calligraphy paintings offer more than just an unadorned form of writing. “A calligraphy painter is not successful till the observer of his painting actually gets the feeling of the particular era to which the script belongs,” says Jamdade.

Explaining the elements of this particular form of art,he says,“While you experiment with landscapes, nature, human figures or abstract themes in popular form of paintings,in calligraphy painting, one has to experiment with letters of the Devnagiri script.”

Having studied Applied Art from the Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya,Jamdade who is basically from Satara and is into the field of calligraphy from a decade, feels though the actual definition of calligraphy is – art of beautiful writing, but not everything can be written beautifully or pictographically for that matter. “If there is a line in the poem or quotations that portrays sorrow, despair or a serious message,it has to be written in such a way that it makes the right impact on the viewer of the painting,” says the artist.

Briefing on the do’s and don’ts of calligraphy painting,he points out that the style of writing should be in sync with the colour scheme on the canvas. “One should also pay attention to the space division,” adds Jamdade, who personally likes to experiment with mantras, quotations and poems.

However, speaking on the current scenario of this art form,“There are 48 letters in Devnagiri script, which form the foundation of calligraphy painting, composition comes later. Although it is artistic impression but one must master the basics first. Nowadays artists start working on the compositions without practicing for adequate time,” he says before concluding.

(Subhash Jamdade will exhibit his work at Balgandharva Kaladalan,Shivajinagar, from February 4 to 6,11 am to 8 pm)
