The list of supporters of Anna Hazare now includes city schools as well. From organising a rally on two-wheelers to switching off school lights in his honour, students and teachers are becoming a part of the nationwide movement,in their own small ways.
On August 16,students and staff at Vidyanchal School stayed without power from 8 am to 2.30 pm. Through their environmental awareness programme, they wanted to offer their support to the cause, said principal Aarti Patil. The students from Std V to Std X were briefed about the cause and they readily agreed to stay without power, she said. Some of the students were so moved by the Hazare movement that even after reaching home they did not allow their parents to use electricity, said Patil.
On Tuesday afternoon,as many as 80 people, including teachers, parents and ex-students,had gathered at the Jnana Prabodhini School to participate in a three-hour two-wheeler rally. The group was later joined by another 150 local people who took part in the rally that started at 12.30 pm and ended at 3.30 pm. Many students wanted to be a part of the movement but we thought it was premature to allow them in something like this. So we thought of educating them about the issue, said principal,Jnana Prabodhini School,Suman Shenoy. She added that in April around 1,400 students had written individual letters on Hazares fight for corruption. The letters were sent to Delhi. Even now the children want to write letter. We might give them a go-ahead, added the principal.
Eknath Bhalegar, one of the teachers of Jnana Prabodhini, who participated in the rally is from Ralegaon Siddhi. How could I stay away from this cause,I have grown up watching Annaji, said Bhalegar, who held a discussion with the students on Lokpal Bill and RTI Act.
Many questions were posed by Std X students at Shamarao Kalmadi High School. The interactive session that covered topics like Lokpal Bill and the RTI Act was conducted by Mithila Joshi and Vrunda Madgulkar on Wednesday. They are the future citizens of the country and it is our responsibility to keep them updated, said principal Kamini Saxena.
As many as 30 students of Class X of Abhinav School too joined the protest at Balgandharva Chowk.
