The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) last week submitted a fresh proposal to the Maharashtra government for installing a statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at the civic garden on JM Road.

Talking about the development, Rajendra Bhosale, Commissioner, PMC, said, “The PMC had got permission and no objection certificates of various departments for installing the statue.”

Former BJP PMC corporators Jyotsana Ekbote, Swati Lokhande, and Siddharth Shirole, who now represents the Shivajinagar Assembly Constituency in Pune, had first mooted the idea of having the statue of the Maratha icon in 2018. A proposal for the statue was also forwarded to the state government by the civic body.

However, the proposal remained pending with the state government, and the latter in February said the NOCs for installing the statue have to be taken afresh as they were more than one year old.

According to sources, the proposed statue would be between eight to 10 feet in height and highlight the fact that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj had written a book in Sanskrit, Budhbhushan, at the young age of 18.
