The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Narayangoan might soon have an open-to-all science park. Aiming to impart basic and everyday science knowledge,GMRT has submitted a proposal of Rs 5 crore to the department of atomic energy to facilitate students from Class V to post graduation to carry out their experiments at the centre.
At present,GMRT is open to public only for one day. The park, once it is ready, will be open on all days. Students from faculties of physics, electronics and communication will be able to carry out experiments at the park.
GMRT officials confirmed that an estimate of Rs 5 crore have been sent to the department of atomic energy. We are also planning to build an activity center where movies will be screened. A photo and poster gallery will be set up for students and other visitors, the first phase of which will be completed in two years. The visitors centre will have posters and photos related to astronomy and astrophysics, an official said.
There are also plans of building a mini planetarium at the venue. Nimisha Kantharia,a scientist and faculty at GMRT said: We have sent our proposal but it is subject to approval from the department. The park will be constructed in phases. It is too early to comment on the amount that will be dedicated to each phase. We will have a clearer picture about the amounts to be invested in another two months.
