Rs 207 crore: damage caused by Cyclone Phyan in district

Crops worth Rs 207 crore were damaged because of cyclone Phyan that struck Pune last week,according to preliminary figures released by the district administration.

Crops worth Rs 207 crore were damaged because of cyclone Phyan that struck Pune last week,according to preliminary figures released by the district administration. About 1.45 lakh farmers,and cultivable land of nearly 75,363 hectares have been affected. The figures will be put before the state government for compensation to be disbursed to the farmers.

Civic officials released the figures at a meeting held at the collectorate,after a survey conducted last week.

“This is a preliminary assessment and a final figure will be arrived at by Thursday. The same will be put up before the state government for issuing compensation,” said resident deputy collector Anil Pawar.

Cyclone Phyan which bought heavy rains to the district for two consecutive days destroyed lot of crops in the district. Each district was asked to give a list of the damaged yield and their worth. After this,the state government will to work out a compensation package for the farmers. “We are putting up figures of the affected farmers who have had less than 50 per cent damage of crops as well more than 50 per cent. The government will work out a formula,” he added.

Pawar said that nearly 33,462 hectares saw destruction of crops below 50 per cent,while nearly 41,900 hectares saw damage of crops above 50 per cent.

The administration which took the help of agriculture officers as well as taluka level officers made a detailed assessment of all the affected crops. Mainly,paddy,sugarcane and vegetable crops were affected.

The district administration also want to ready the final list on Thursday before putting up the final figures of crops destroyed in the cyclone. The district administration also included in the list 24 farmers whose crops were destroyed under shade net cultivation,and124 farmers whose green houses were damaged.
