Retd Pune jawan booked as bullet from his revolver misfires, injures teen son

The incident took place around 3.15 pm on Tuesday at the house of 40-year-old retired Army jawan Nitin Hanumant Shirke, a resident of Vanrai Nagar in Dhankawadi.

An ex-serviceman was booked after his 13-year-old son sustained a bullet injury on his leg when a round allegedly misfired his from his licenced revolver. Police said the bullet misfired when the bag in which the revolver was kept, fell off from a cupboard shelf.

The incident took place around 3.15 pm on Tuesday at the house of 40-year-old retired Army jawan Nitin Hanumant Shirke, a resident of Vanrai Nagar in Dhankawadi. His son, Abhay (13), who is a class 7 student of a local school, has sustained an injury on his calf. Police have booked Shirke for the act of endangering the life or personal safety of others under section 125 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The FIR was registered on Wednesday.

“Shirke has retired from the Army and currently works as security staff with a private entity in Pune. He has a licence for a revolver which he had placed in a bag in a cupboard in the house. At the time of the incident, the boy opened the cupboard to take out some clothes when the bag fell onto the floor. Due to the impact, one round was misfired, an initial probe suggests. The boy has sustained a bullet injury to his calf. He was taken to a hospital and is receiving treatment,” an officer from Sahakar Nagar police station said.

The officer said, “At the time of the incident, Shirke’s wife and younger son were also home. We have booked him for negligent handling of the firearm which amounts to endangering the life or personal safety of others under section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is on.”
